 311 is the kind of band that feels like sunshine in musical form, a staple of chill beach and surf culture that’s been around for what feels like forever. I grew up with their music—it was the soundtrack of summer days when I was just a kid in grade school, dreaming of waves and endless skies. Their sound, a perfect fusion of reggae, rock, and funk, always had this laid-back vibe that made you feel like everything was going to be okay. They weren't just a band; they were a mood; a whole lifestyle wrapped in good vibes and positivity.

Seeing them live in Goodthings Festival 2024 at December 7 was like a dream come true—a moment I had been waiting for since those carefree childhood days. But the real magic happened at their sideshow in Liberty Hall. Imagine this: a venue with a capacity of just about 1,000 people, intimate enough to feel like they were playing just for you. I was only about ten rows back from the stage, close enough to catch every strum, every beat, every ounce of their energy. It wasn’t just a concert; it felt like a private gathering of people who got it, who felt the same connection to the music that shaped so many of our lives.

The energy in that room was electric but comforting, like a warm ocean breeze. It was more than just a show—it was a reminder of how far I'd come from those childhood days, holding on to dreams and music that still mean the world to me. It’s moments like that, where time feels like it stands still, that you realize how powerful music can be. 311 isn’t just a band; they’re a thread woven into the fabric of memories, dreams, and everything cool about being alive.

Good Things Festival 2024: The Highs, Lows, and Unforgettable Moments

It’s been a week since the Good Things Festival 2024 in Sydney, and my ears are still ringing from the sheer energy of the day! Held at Centennial Park on December 7, this year’s event was a mix of nostalgic highs, unexpected changes, and a lineup that kept fans rocking from start to finish.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first: Sum 41 had to cancel their much-anticipated performance due to frontman Deryck Whibley’s illness. Diagnosed with pneumonia, doctors advised him not to perform, marking a disappointing turn for fans eager to see them one last time during their farewell tour. While their absence left a gap, the festival more than compensated with its incredible lineup.

The Highlights

Bowling for Soup brought their signature quirky energy, warming up the crowd with singalong anthems like 1985.

Billy Corgan, best known as the frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins, delivered a stripped-back yet mesmerizing solo set that showcased his raw talent.

Sleeping With Sirens amped up the energy with their emotionally charged performance, bringing fans of post-hardcore to their feet.

Aussie legends The Living End reminded everyone why they’ve been a staple in Australian rock, with Prisoner of Society still hitting just as hard.

Violent Femmes brought their unique punk-folk vibe, with classics like Blister in the Sun getting the whole crowd dancing.

Jet, back in full swing, nailed their set with anthems like Are You Gonna Be My Girl, delivering nostalgia in spades.

And then there was Korn. As headliners, they tore the stage apart with their iconic nu-metal sound, closing the festival with a performance that was nothing short of epic.

The Atmosphere

Despite Sum 41’s absence, the festival vibe was electric. The diverse lineup, from punk rock to heavy metal, ensured there was something for everyone. Between sets, the STAGE 666 carnival-style entertainment and food trucks offering everything from loaded fries to vegan bowls 

The Resilient Crowd

What stood out most? The fans. Ponchos and umbrellas became the day’s unofficial uniform, but no one seemed to care about the rain. Whether dancing in puddles or screaming lyrics into the storm, the crowd embodied the punk and metal spirit: resilient, passionate, and unstoppable.

If you missed it this year, don’t sleep on tickets for 2025. As always, Good Things doesn’t just bring good music—it brings a community, memories, and a damn good time.
